Nicolay interprets a classic

D/L: Nicolay "Nautilus"

Nicolay is one of my favorite 'post-golden-era' hip hop producers without any fraction of a doubt. His work is consistently lush with soul and grit, and it's all original works with no samples or counterparts. Like many, many others, I got turned on to Nicolay's beats from the epic Foreign Exchange debut from 2004 "Connected" on forward-thinking UK label BBE. To keep the history brief for those that don't know, Foreign Exchange is comprised of Phonte from Little Brother outta Durham, NC and the man Nicolay from Holland. They had first made contact over message boards on Okayplayer.com and began recording and sending music back and forth. Soon after, Phonte and Nicolay formed the Foreign Exchange without having ever met each other in person. Phonte, being one of the baddest MC's of these times, prolly felt this heat coming off of his desktop in '03 and just had to get with it. Nicolay gives us this original tune (instead of using royalty free samples for a Bob James tribute), he also releases the tune as a free download to share with all his peoples.

And of course the original, an unspeakable classic in my mind.

Major Lazer & Jahdan get nice again

Jahdan levels the vibes with this one.....perfect summer tune. I'm obviously stoked that Major Lazer (Diplo & Switch, see post below) reconize the real and put Jah D on the album (OUT NOW!) When I heard from my man Gravy that Diplo had contacted him to try and get Jahdan on the album I was excited to see what would happen with that.. I guess I was expecting a club/reggae crossover joint which is more the direction Major Lazer seemed to be going, but when I heard Jah D's signature vibes on a culture tune I got just what I wanted. Slaying dem every time, time and time again. "When you rollin in cash, babylon a pree dem waan know how you get it so fast" BOOOOM!!!!

Major Lazer - Hold The Line (Video)

This is the official video and first single (previous to" Zumbi") from Major Lazer, a side project comprised of super-producers Diplo and Switch (aka Solid Groove). Hold The Line features vocals from Mr Lexx (aka Lexxus) and Santigold (don't know why she took the O out) The Major Lazer album entitled "Guns don't kill people lazers do" is slated to drop on June 16, and is built around collboarations done mostly with JA artists and recorded @ Tuff Gong studios direct from Kingston yahd (awesome). when I first got wind of the concept a while back I was muy excited, considering I'm an avid fan and chef of dancehall/club crossovers myself. The album features a slew of other JA champs, and...I just got word that my associate Jahdan Blakkamoore will be featured on the album as well!!

Anyway, "hold the line" is defnitely a boom tune, and I look forward to the full-length. The video is cool, falling into some pretty typical mad decent-isms...

I had also heard that Major Lazer's SXSW performance was heavy.... evident in this clip

Pass thru RCRDLBL.COM to cop a few more tunes and read up Major Lazer's enthralling bio. While you're @ RCRDLBL feel free to cop my oldish remix of Noble Society's "The Swarm". You can still right click and download HERE
